#sciastro is supposed to be fun, so we want to keep it as free and simple as possible. But to enhance your visit, and that of other users, here are a few guidelines that we would like for you to follow. We generally prefer gentle warnings over kicks/bans - but if we feel that a user is continually abusing these guidelines, we can, and will, take action.

  1. This is a family oriented channel, so foul or adult oriented language should not be used. This is actually a rule and violation will result in you being kicked off the channel. Repeated violation will result in banning.
  2. No one is to use this channel for their person gain.
  3. Please check all club politics at the door.
  4. Harassment of other channel members will not be tolerated.
  5. Please avoid EXCESSIVE use of colors. The later versions of many IRC clients include color capabilities, which are fine when used sensibly and can add to the IRC experience. Their overuse, however, can make a channel's screen look like Mimi's cosmetic bag. To avoid this, we ask that all users abide by these simple guidelines.
bulletThe use of bold, italic or straight colored text (non reversed) to emphasize a word or phrase is OK.
bulletMulti-Lined greetings or ASCII art are NOT allowed, PERIOD.
bulletReversed (colored background) greetings and such must be one line or less, used sparingly and avoided completely during times of heavy channel usage.
  6. The use of sound can enhance the IRC experience, and many people on #sciastro do use sound. However, if you have an automated events handler set up to "ask" for sounds you do not have, they should be in the form of a "notice" and not posted to the channel window. Most IRC software allows the user to configure it so notices go to the server (status) window. This configuration allow chatting without the distraction of frequent get-sound requests.
  7. Manufacturer bashing should not be done here. There is enough of this in other places, so let's not bring the wars in here. It is ok to say that a certain brand didn't work, but this one does, or I had no luck with brand x. But keep it logical, and meaningful.
  8. Off topic discussions such as astrology, metaphysics, UFOs, aliens, cover ups, etc should be taken to their appropriate channels. There are channels already in existence that have people interested in those subjects.
  9. Other off topic discussions are welcome, but if they get too in depth it might be a good idea to make a temporary channel and take it there. For instance, calculating the Hubble constant.
  10. NO BOTS, clones or unattended connections
bulletAs a matter of good "netiquette"......
bulletIf you are going to be away from your computer for short while, please mark yourself "away" and change your nick to reflect this. For example, if you nick is Bob_OH, change it to Bob_BRB (be right back) or Bob_BBL (be back later) or Bob_AFK (away from keyboard).
bulletIf you are going to be away from your computer for an extended period of time, please log off!  IRC resources are strained as it is; please exercise common courtesy and log off the network, so as not to waste bandwidth resources. We encourage active participation on #sciastro - logging on and then "saying" nothing for hours on end, or not responding when others "speak" to you, is counterproductive to the spirit of the channel and considered by many to be rude.

In all cases, the channel owner's decision is final.
